The city authorities in Smederevo announced that emergency services are extinguishing a fire that broke out at around 5 a.m. at the unsanitary landfill in Godominsko Polje, urging residents to remain indoors because of increased smoke concentrations.
According to the Smederevo authorities, all available resources, construction machinery and fire and rescue units have been deployed to extinguish the fire.
All indications are that human activity caused the fire, but more details about the incident will become available after the relevant Ministry of Internal Affairs services arrive at the scene, the statement said.
Given that the fire has led to increased smoke concentrations, residents are urged to remain indoors whenever possible until the danger has passed, keep windows and doors closed to reduce smoke entering their homes, avoid spending extended periods outdoors and refrain from outdoor physical activity. They are also advised to pay particular attention to protecting children, older people, pregnant women and people with chronic illnesses, especially those with heart and lung conditions.
If they experience any health problems, they should immediately contact the nearest healthcare facility or call emergency medical services.
Residents have also been urged to follow official announcements from the relevant authorities and act in accordance with their instructions.
The Smederevo city authorities have also asked residents not to spread unverified information and to help protect everyone’s health and safety through responsible behavior.
The Smederevo authorities also recalled that work is underway in Godominsko Polje to close the unsanitary landfill, which will resolve the decades-long waste disposal problem in Smederevo and significantly reduce the risk of fires breaking out.
