Ohio authorities have arrested four people on child endangerment charges after discovering 16 children in desperate need of medical attention at a rural home in southern Ohio on Tuesday.
The FBI’s Ohio field office and the local sheriff’s department searched the house in the small village of Hamden, where they found the children living in what officials described as “horrific” conditions.
“The conditions were beyond anything you could imagine for adults, let alone children,” Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost said during a press conference.
Police arrested Gary Siders Jr., Gary Siders Sr., Christina Siders, and Elizabeth Siders.
The suspects have not yet appeared in court, and no public defenders have been appointed to represent them.
Vinton County Prosecutor William Archer said the four are facing second-degree felony child endangerment charges because the case involves “serious physical harm.”
Authorities have not confirmed whether the children are related but said the case does not involve human trafficking. Officials also stated that the suspects were not local residents.
Hamden is a village of fewer than 1,000 residents located about 60 miles (97 kilometers) southeast of Columbus.
The children ranged in age from 2 to 18 years old and included both boys and girls, officials said.
Several of the children were in critical condition when they were found, while two had to be transported to trauma centers for treatment of their injuries.
Yost described the scene as the worst he had witnessed in his entire career, calling what investigators encountered “pure evil.”
Police also executed a search warrant at the property on Tuesday, and the investigation remains ongoing. The four suspects are scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday morning.
“Justice will be served for these children,” Yost told KSAT.com.
