At a ceremony held at Moscow’s “ATOM” Museum, the winners of the seventh season of the international scientific and educational project “Icebreaker of Knowledge,” organized with the support of the Russian state corporation “Rosatom,” were officially announced. Among the selected finalists who will embark on a unique journey to the North Pole this August is Serbian high school student Viktor.
Around 5,000 talented students aged 14 to 16 from around the world took part in this year’s international edition of the competition, including participants from Armenia, Belarus, Brazil, India, China, Turkey, Hungary, Egypt, and South Africa. For Serbia and several other countries, participation in this expedition marks a historic milestone, as their young citizens will reach the northernmost point on Earth in this way for the first time.
“This is a great joy and an important step forward for me. I am proud that I will be able to represent Serbia at such a major international event. I believe moments like these help us understand what we truly want to do in life,” Viktor said following this historic achievement.
The road to the North Pole through three rounds of selection
The international selection process began on May 5 and consisted of three elimination stages. In the first round, students answered questions in a demanding scientific quiz that tested their knowledge of natural sciences, nuclear energy, and the history of Arctic exploration. The second stage was educational and consisted of a series of expert webinars on Rosatom’s advanced technologies, Arctic navigation safety, and the role of nuclear energy in the global economy.
Based on their scores, the top 10 participants from each country advanced to the final, where they submitted creative projects on the topic, “How Nuclear Technologies Are Changing the World Today.” The projects were evaluated by an international jury composed of leading experts from the nuclear industry, science, and education, including officials from the Russian Ministry of Education, Arctic research institutes, as well as Dmitry Kuzmitsky, an officer aboard the nuclear icebreaker Taymyr.
Scientific camp aboard a nuclear giant
The winners aboard the nuclear icebreaker 50 Let Pobedy (50 Years of Victory) will take part in an intensive scientific and educational program. They will work with leading Russian and international experts, while lectures, laboratory experiments, and masterclasses will focus on the technologies of the future.
Russia is currently the only country in the world with an operational fleet of nuclear icebreakers, managed by Atomflot (part of the Rosatom corporation). These organizations strategically invest in youth education through projects such as “Icebreaker of Knowledge,” with the goal of promoting science and developing future engineers and researchers for the Northern Sea Route, the shortest maritime route between Europe and Asia.
The first Serbian aboard a nuclear icebreaker
Viktor has entered history as the first high school student from Serbia to board the giant Russian nuclear icebreaker 50 Years of Victory and set off on an expedition to the very top of the planet. Competing against around 5,000 talented students from 22 countries, the young Serbian representative successfully passed the rigorous three-stage selection process and secured a place among the world’s scientific elite, who will depart for the North Pole in August.
