Marijana Kosanović from Sremska Mitrovica and her partner provided shelter for a young stork that had fallen behind its flock on the journey south. After spending several days living in a garage, around the yard and inside the house, Arsenije was taken in by employees of the Provincial Institute for Nature Protection, who will help him reunite with his own kind.

Arsenije arrived at Marijana’s home thanks to the reputation she had earned in the city for helping animals. Last weekend, she was informed that a young male stork in need of help was on a boulevard in Sremska Mitrovica.

“My boyfriend and I try to take care of whoever we can, whenever and as much as we can. That’s why they contacted me, especially since it was Saturday and the Institute for Nature Protection in Novi Sad was closed at the time, so there was no one available to take in the stork,” Marijana Kosanović told N1.

They initially went there intending to feed and give water to the bird, but when they realized it was not safe in that location, they decided to take it with them.

“When we saw that he wasn’t safe there, that he couldn’t fly and that some dog could attack him, we moved him to the yard. He was very tame from the very beginning, immediately started eating and drinking, which is a good sign.”

And what do you feed a stork? Marijana says he was fed sprats, and during the several days they cared for him, he stayed in a neighbor’s garage.

“He was in our house only briefly, until we found a solution — our neighbor’s garage — and that’s where we placed him. We checked on him three to four times a day, gave him water and fed him sprats,” she added.

Although young, stork Arsenije is neither small nor a domesticated bird. Still, he allowed Marijana and her boyfriend to approach him and take him with them.

“I simply think he sensed that we wouldn’t harm him. We know how to approach cats and dogs, which still have much more interaction with people than birds do, so we were especially careful with him. I truly believe he sensed that,” the woman from Sremska Mitrovica said.

On Tuesday, Arsenije was taken over by experts from the Provincial Institute for Nature Protection in Novi Sad. The plan is for a veterinarian to examine him first to determine whether he has any problems with his wings and why he did not fly south with his flock.

If everything turns out to be fine, Arsenije will continue his journey south. If he is unable to fly, he will move north — to Palić, Marijana says, convinced that everything will be alright in either case and that the Institute’s staff will take good care of him.

I can generate a heartwarming news-style image of Arsenije the stork with Marijana in Sremska Mitrovica—which style should I use: photorealistic, cinematic, or illustrated?
