Among this year’s recipients of British royal honors is a person from Serbia — full professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Belgrade, Mila Stajević, head of the Cardiothoracic Surgery Department at the Institute for Mother and Child, the British Embassy in Belgrade announced today.
Stajević was awarded the British Empire Medal, for her outstanding contribution to strengthening cooperation between the United Kingdom and Serbia in the field of children’s medicine, as well as for decades of work in educating and supporting new generations of doctors.
“Her dedication to the exchange of knowledge and experience between healthcare institutions in Serbia and the United Kingdom has helped numerous patients receive top-quality medical care, while opening opportunities for young doctors to pursue further training and professional development,” the statement added.
She played a particularly important role, it was noted, in establishing and developing the long-standing cooperation between the “Dr. Vukan Čupić” Institute for Mother and Child in Belgrade and London’s Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH), one of the world’s leading pediatric medicine centers.
Thanks to this cooperation, many leading British and international cardiologists visited Serbia, while Serbian doctors, nurses and healthcare workers gained valuable experience and training in the United Kingdom, contributing to the improvement of healthcare for children in Serbia, the statement said.
British Ambassador to Serbia Edward Ferguson said he was very pleased that King Charles III had recognized Professor Stajević’s outstanding work, noting that generations of doctors in Serbia and the United Kingdom had learned from one another thanks to her energy, vision and dedication, and that thousands of children and their families had been given new hope.
