When a love for animals and nature come together, life in the countryside, away from the hustle and bustle of the city, becomes a better option even for young people. That is why Jovana Rajković from Klepani, a village near Prilike, decided to take up goat farming. Despite her daily responsibilities, she believes that having her own factory under the open sky is the best choice, and that producing healthy food is the future.
“Branka, Zlatana, little Goat, come, come, come…,” Jovana Rajković from Klepani calls out to her goats.
“When they are not here, I call them like that and they come. Whether my husband is around or whether I sometimes let them graze outside the fenced area and watch over them. Whenever I call them, they know I am calling them for a reason and they always come,” says Jovana.
She continues: “For example, I feed them (Branka, don’t hit her), I feed them and milk them, and then I stay a little longer to feed them, pet them, hug them, and talk sweetly to them. Little horns. And they love it, they absolutely adore when I pet and hug them, and when I’m in a hurry and can’t do it, they get upset, wondering where I went and why we’re not cuddling.”
This is a typical day for Jovana Rajković, who decided to devote herself to goat farming because of her love for animals and village life. She treats the animals like pets, and for her they are part of the family.
“That one is Jelka, that one is Smiljana, these are Zlatana, black Branka, she is dangerous, the boss, and she beats up all the others,” Jovana points out.
She makes various types of cheese from goat’s milk, combining them with mountain herbs that abound in that part of the Ivanjica municipality. She says she learned the art of cheesemaking from her grandmother Mica.
“I tell her – I just don’t know who you listened to and who talked you into doing this. And she says to me: ‘Grandma, nobody talked me into it, I love it, I want it myself, I love doing it, I love animals and that’s it.’ And there you have it. I wanted her to get a job, go to work, come home, rest and go out. This way, by God, there are a lot of obligations around the animals and the goats. But she loves it, what can I do, there’s no point talking,” emphasizes Jovana’s grandmother, Mica Rajković from Klepani.
Jovana adds: “Life in the countryside means peace, freedom, and simply love to me – an enormous love that I receive from these animals and that I give back to them.”
She is also surrounded by other animals. She says that Bela the Puli dog and Mladen the pony are best friends. The only animals she has not yet named are the poultry. But she does not rule that out either. After graduating from high school, she decided to dedicate herself to rural life and the production of healthy food, because she believes it is a promising future for young people.
