Serbia is observing a day of mourning today due to the tragic death of eight people in a fire at a nursing home in the Belgrade municipality of Barajevo.
The decision to declare a day of mourning was made by the Serbian government at its yesterday’s session. In the fire at the “Ivanović” Home for Adults and the Elderly in Veliki Borak, Barajevo, eight residents died and seven were injured.
Police have arrested three people in connection with the fire, including the person responsible for the facility, on suspicion of committing a serious crime against public safety, punishable by imprisonment of two to 12 years.

According to the Law on Marking Days of Mourning, the media in Serbia are obliged to broadcast the decision on declaring a day of mourning and the program for marking it, which is adopted by the competent authority or body designated by it, in their programs, including programs intended for foreign countries, on the day the day of mourning is declared.
The media are also obliged to inform the public about memorial gatherings organized on the occasion of the day of mourning by the competent authorities of Serbia or bodies designated by them, to broadcast music and programs appropriate to the day of mourning instead of humorous, entertainment, folklore, and other programs with entertainment and folk music, and to adjust the detailed program schedule for the time of the day of mourning.
Newspaper publishing organizations that publish daily newspapers are obliged to print their newspapers entirely in black on the day of mourning, stating on the front page the decision on declaring a day of mourning and the program for marking it, the Ministry of Information and Telecommunications reminded.
