The Embassy of Serbia in Athens issued a statement regarding the incident that occurred on July 20, 2026, when Serbian citizen Vera Linić (62) suddenly fell ill during a hours-long wait at the Evzoni border crossing.
An ambulance arrived after 40 minutes, after which she was transported to the Ippokrateio General Hospital in Thessaloniki.
Doctors diagnosed her with a brain aneurysm (brain hemorrhage), which caused severe damage.
“During the following 24 hours, Vera Linić was connected to a respirator, and then they asked the family for consent to disconnect the machine, given that high blood pressure caused irreversible brain damage and so-called clinical death occurred,” the embassy announced.
As a reminder, when Vera fell ill, her son Dario publicly made an urgent appeal to all good people to help them, and he explained to our portal what the whole nightmare looked like and what followed.
“We resuscitated her for a few minutes, and in the end revived her, and then the ambulance took her away. She is currently in the hospital in Thessaloniki and they said a brain aneurysm ruptured, as a result of which her heart stopped and she stopped breathing. She was already feeling unwell the day before, but we thought it was heat stroke; however, it seems that the problem had already started then,” Dario pointed out.
Vera did not get health insurance, so even the Serbian consulate could not help them.
“She didn’t get health insurance. We called the Serbian Consulate in Thessaloniki and they were very unkind and didn’t even try to offer any help or advice. They said ‘How do you expect us to help you,'” Dario quoted them in an interview for Telegraf.rs.
Dario then revealed that in the meantime he drove the children to Belgrade, and that from there he is trying to resolve the issue through the Republic Health Insurance Fund.
“For now, we are not thinking about money. That is why I didn’t announce that we need money. Right now we are only thinking about my mother being okay,” Dario concluded.
