The Hornjak family lives in very difficult conditions in the village of Mošorin near Titel. A collapsed house is just one of the problems. Mother Živana, father Miroslav, children Jovan (24), Rade (20), Slobodan (16), and Zorka are even forced to use a former shed that isn’t even covered as a bathroom. There are also various health and psychological issues that we will not write about publicly.

“We live modestly, as best as we can, but things often run short. The older boys do heavy physical labor in the barn – every day in two shifts they clean, prepare food for the cows… Unfortunately, little can be earned. Rade barely makes 30,000 dinars a month. My husband goes to construction sites and the forest, but not constantly, and I used to work, but unfortunately, I had to stop because I got sick. I hope I will soon be able to get a job again, there is a dairy here,” mother Živana continued.

Recently, they found themselves in an even more uncomfortable situation considering that the house they live in was sold. A factory is supposed to be built there, so they must move out urgently. Where they will go and how they will manage – they do not know.

“They met us halfway, but the deadline has already passed. Unfortunately, we do not have a home of our own!”

The perspective of this family is very bleak. Inside the house, the smoke from a faulty stove can be smelled, and there is also a lot of moisture, which further endangers the already impaired health of the household members. The living room is reached via an uneven earthen floor. The question is whether such conditions can even be called life?!

“We don’t even have running water, except for one tap in the yard. The electrical wiring is also bad, and the power often goes out. Generally, everything is very unsafe. No matter how much we try to clean and whitewash, it’s in vain, everything is old and falling off,” the mother added.

Unfortunately, Zorka and her brothers do not have many friends. Since they are poor, they say that “the rich avoid them.”

“Sometimes they are good, sometimes rude. They don’t say anything to me, they just don’t want to hang out with me. I even left folklore because of that,” she said.

Hope was born!

The Hornjaks heard about the Humanitarian Organization Serbs for Serbs for the first time when we secured a house for a family in their village – perhaps you remember the Čuturilo family who lived in a cave. Now, as we appeared in their lives, hope was also born in them. Hope that things can be better and that they might get a house too.

Everyone who is able and wishes to help the Hornjak family can deposit funds into the accounts found at the link HERE.
