The French newspaper “Le Figaro” published the news of the death of Serbian singer and actress Olivera Katarina, calling her a Yugoslav diva and star of the 1967 Cannes Film Festival.
The newspaper emphasizes that in 1968 she had as many as 72 concerts at the “Olympia,” the famous Paris concert hall.
It points out that the Serbian singer and actress was a star of the 60s and 70s of the last century in the former Yugoslavia and that she was especially known for her role in the film “I Even Met Happy Gypsies,” awarded at the Cannes Film Festival.
“Le Figaro” also states that Olivera Katarina was born in Belgrade in 1940 and that she left her law studies to spend a year in Paris, and upon returning to Yugoslavia enrolled at the Theatre Academy in Belgrade, soon getting her first roles, first in theatre and then in film.
In the text dedicated to Olivera Katarina, the French newspaper also recalls that in a show on Yugoslav television she was interviewed together with French actor and composer Gilbert Bécaud, right before a joint concert.
Actress and singer Olivera Katarina passed away yesterday at the age of 87.
Olivera Katarina was one of the most popular actresses and singers in Yugoslavia at the turn of the 1960s to the 1970s.
She made her debut at the National Theatre with a role in “Koštana” in 1962, and achieved her most famous film role in “I Even Met Happy Gypsies” (1967).
