The mortal remains of Blagoje Jovovic, who carried out the assassination of the leader of the NDH, Ante Pavelic, will be transferred from Argentina to Belgrade. Minister Milica Djurdjevic Stamenkovski confirmed that the procedure is underway. This transfer is being realized at the proposal of the Government, with the consent of the family and descendants. Marija Jovovic, daughter of Blagoje Jovovic, stated for the First Program of Radio Belgrade that the transfer could occur in the autumn.

The assassination of Ante Pavelic was carried out in 1957 in Argentina, and he died from the consequences a year later. For decades, the identity of the assassin was a mystery, and it was believed that UDBA was behind everything.

The full truth was revealed only in 1998, during Jovovic’s first and last visit to his homeland.

Blagoje Jovovic then confessed to Metropolitan Amfilohije at the Ostrog Monastery. His daughter recalls that moment: “That is when he opened his heart, so my mother and I, after God, found out what he had done. I heard everything for the first time near Ostrog.”

Life in Argentina and preparation for the assassination

Jovovic arrived in Argentina as an immigrant on September 27, 1947. Initially, he lived in Mar del Plata, where he opened a hotel, not knowing that Pavelic was hiding in the same country.

When he learned from the newspapers that Pavelic was living near Buenos Aires, he sold the hotel and began preparations for the assassination.

In Argentina, Pavelic enjoyed the protection of President Juan Peron and lived freely, even acting as his advisor.

Jovovic tracked his movements for months, gathering information at the German restaurant “El Siervo,” where Ustashe gathered.

Milan Gacesa, Mileva Gacesa, who gave him the pistol, and Milo Krivokapic helped him in the realization of the plan.

His daughter states that he was deeply shaken by the NATO bombing of FR Yugoslavia in 1999: “He experienced great stress when the NATO bombing began. When NATO bombed Yugoslavia, he, as I say, fell.”

Marija Jovovic today promotes books about her father and emphasizes that his resting in Belgrade will be a great symbol for the Serbian people.

She also announced work on the third part of the book, which will contain numerous previously unpublished photographs.
