The Ministry of Defence has informed the public that the loud explosion-like sounds that alarmed residents of Šumadija at around 10:30 a.m. today were caused by a pair of Serbian Air Force aircraft breaking the sound barrier while being scrambled to intercept a plane reportedly carrying an explosive device, following a bomb threat.
According to a statement from the Ministry of Defence, the aircraft in question was a passenger plane operated by Wizz Air, flying on the Brussels–Sofia route.
Serbian Air Force fighter jets were deployed after receiving notification from the Serbia and Montenegro Air Traffic Services Agency (SMATSA). Some air defence units, as well as search and rescue forces, were also placed on the highest level of alert.
After intercepting the passenger aircraft, visually identifying it and escorting it to the border with the Republic of Bulgaria, the Serbian Air Force jets returned to their home base at Batajnica.
The Ministry of Defence and the Serbian Armed Forces expressed regret for alarming the public, but stressed that in situations of this kind, it is essential for aircraft to carry out interceptions as quickly as possible.
