In Jagodina, a boy is growing up who has merged tradition and modern social networks in an unusual way – by crocheting carpets that have made him an internet sensation. Viktor Mitic, a fifth-grade student, has gained more than 230,000 followers on social networks thanks to his extraordinary hobby and his persistence that every new “loop” follows the growth of his community on Instagram.
In an interview with Euronews Serbia, Viktor revealed that he learned crocheting from his grandmother, and that over time, with the help of the internet and his own curiosity, he perfected the technique and decided to present his work to the public. Although he encountered misunderstandings from his surroundings at the beginning, today he says he has increasing support from friends, teachers, and family.
“My ordinary day used to be school, then homework and play. Now I crochet first, then I do the rest,” Viktor said, adding that school still remains his priority.
His most ambitious project is a large crocheted carpet that grows daily in accordance with the number of followers – for every new person on the network, one loop is created. Although he admits that he cannot keep up with every detail, he says that he continues the work every day and that he receives both orders and material donations.
“My goal is for as many people as possible to learn how to crochet. I want to record tutorials and show that old crafts can also be interesting to young people,” Viktor says.
His family also participates in his creation – his brother edits the videos and manages the social networks, while his father helps with the procurement of materials and communication with collaborators. Despite the sudden popularity, Viktor says he wants to continue developing his hobby and one day turn it into a job.

When asked where his carpet will end up, he answers that he doesn’t have a final plan yet: “I want it to be as long, colorful, and special-looking as possible. We’ll see how far it will go.”
The story of “Viktor the Crocheter,” as he presents himself on the networks, has become an example of how a hobby can grow into a movement that inspires peers to return to traditional skills and find their own creative expression.
