Former executive of Loreto Hospital in Chicago, Anosh Ahmed, accused of embezzling millions from the hospital and defrauding the federal government of nearly 300 million dollars, and who was arrested in Serbia, has been released to house arrest.
Anosh Ahmed was arrested in Serbia on November 30. The U.S. government requested his extradition, according to a court filing from Wednesday, Serbian Times reported.
Ahmed remained in custody in Serbia, and has now been released to house arrest.
Ahmed and his companion Samir Suhail are charged with jointly embezzling 15 million dollars from Loreto, a hospital funded by taxpayers’ money, and through corruption and bribery, directing contracts worth another 19 million dollars toward Suhail. Suhail was Ahmed’s friend, business partner, and first neighbor in Trump Tower in Chicago, media reported.
Ahmed is also accused in a separate COVID testing scheme that defrauded the government of about 300 million dollars. The charges followed a series of investigations by the portal Block Club Chicago that shed light on the work of Ahmed and Suhail.
