Ž.J., Assistant Head of the City Administration for Economy of the City of Novi Sad, and M.B., Advisor in the City Administration for Economy of the City of Novi Sad, have been arrested on suspicion that they abused their official positions and damaged the city budget by nearly 7.4 million dinars.
The Higher Public Prosecutor’s Office in Novi Sad announced that in cooperation with the Special Department for Suppression of Corruption of this prosecutor’s office and the Criminal Police Administration, Department for Combating Corruption, Section in Novi Sad, the following suspects were arrested: Ž.J., Assistant Head of the City Administration for Economy of the City of Novi Sad, and M.B., Advisor in the City Administration for Economy of the City of Novi Sad for Entrepreneurship and Economic-Business Development.
The arrested suspects, it is added, are suspected of committing one extended criminal offense each of abuse of official position, by failing to perform their official duties and causing property damage to the budget of the City of Novi Sad in the total amount of 7,390,000.00 dinars.

“During the actions taken so far within the pre-investigation procedure, it has been established that there are grounds for suspicion that Ž.J. and M.B., as officials in the City Administration for Economy of the City of Novi Sad, were responsible for controlling reports on the justification of the use of allocated funds, as well as evidence of implemented activities regarding concluded contracts with citizens’ associations for the implementation of certain programs (projects), which they did not do, but instead for each program (project) they compiled a document with untrue content stating that the specified activities and set goals were qualitatively and successfully implemented, even though those citizens’ associations, as submitters of reports on the justification of funds, either did not submit evidence that the activities were implemented or submitted completely inadequate evidence along with the reports,” the prosecutor’s office explained in a statement.
Based on the approval of the Special Department for Suppression of Corruption of the Higher Public Prosecutor’s Office in Novi Sad, the suspects have been detained for up to 48 hours, within which period, in accordance with the law, they will be brought and questioned in the Special Department for Suppression of Corruption of the Higher Public Prosecutor’s Office in Novi Sad, while the public will be informed about further procedural decisions in a timely manner.
