The administration of US President Donald Trump has identified targets for an attack in Venezuela, including military facilities used for drug trafficking, US officials familiar with the situation confirmed today.
The unnamed officials told the Wall Street Journal that the targets, if Trump decides to order airstrikes, would send a clear message to Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro that it is time to step down. Although Trump has not made a final decision on issuing an order for ground strikes, officials said that a potential air campaign would focus on targets central to drug gangs and the Maduro regime.
According to one official, potential targets being considered include military-controlled ports and airports allegedly used for drug trafficking, including naval facilities and runways.
Since Trump’s inauguration, the United States has deployed a large amount of military firepower to the Caribbean, while simultaneously stepping up a lethal campaign against alleged drug smugglers in the region.
Airstrikes on targets inside Venezuela would mark a significant escalation of the campaign, which has so far been limited to airstrikes on vessels that the US Department of Defense, following the attacks, stated were transporting drugs.
