U.S. President [Donald Trump] warned on Tuesday that Chicago will “die” if federal authorities do not intervene, calling on Illinois Governor J. B. Pritzker and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson to request assistance from Washington following a new wave of violence in which 41 people were shot over the weekend, while three people lost their lives.

“Violence in Chicago is out of control and at a record level. It has never been worse! These numbers are becoming normalized. This has completely gotten out of control!” Trump wrote on his Truth Social network.

The U.S. president said the city would continue to decline until local officials request federal assistance in the fight against crime.

“The city will die if the mayor or governor does not call in the federal government for help — which is a finely tuned machine for fighting crime. I’m waiting for the call,” Trump added.

Trump’s reaction came after a weekend marked by the deadliest incident of the year. In the Washington Park neighborhood on the city’s South Side, masked attackers opened fire during a gathering, wounding 15 people, while 35-year-old Rontonio Guterz succumbed to his injuries. Police have so far made no arrests.

In another separate attack on the city’s West Side, 15-year-old Kiren Wormly was killed in a drive-by shooting.

According to official police data, Chicago has recorded 1,255 victims of gun violence since the beginning of the year, a slight increase compared with the same period last year, while the number of homicides has risen by 2.9 percent, with a total of 288 victims.

Trump pointed to the results achieved by his administration in Washington, claiming that he could quickly solve the security problem.

“No one should have to live under these conditions. As in Washington and other places, we will quickly clean up the crime. The state and city cannot do it alone. Governor Pritzker, CALL!,” the president said.

However, Governor Pritzker and Mayor Johnson have firmly rejected cooperation. Pritzker, who has previously strongly opposed Trump’s threats to deploy the National Guard, said that the president is “neither wanted nor needed” in Illinois, adding that the city has its own strategies for preventing violence.

The conflict between the White House and local authorities in Chicago has been ongoing for some time. In December last year, the U.S. Supreme Court blocked the Trump administration’s attempt to deploy National Guard units to Chicago as part of an operation to protect Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents.

Trump is otherwise expected to visit the Chicago area later this month for the prestigious Presidents Cup golf tournament, which begins on September 24 at the “Medina” club, where he will appear in the role of honorary chairman of the event.
