In the previous month – it has been turbulent in Inđija. An activist’s apartment was broken into, several citizens were reportedly attacked – while a student’s car was set on fire. We sent an official inquiry to the police about this case – and we are waiting for the answers.
The smell of charring is still felt in front of the house of the Runić family. The car that burned down at the beginning of the week is destroyed.
Around four in the morning, the flash was noticed by a twenty-year-old student Nikola Runić.
“I hadn’t fallen asleep yet, I open my eyes – I see orange. I jumped up, I thought that lightning didn’t strike the house, as I opened the window, I see the car burning below… Call dad, flew downstairs – it didn’t even cross my mind what it could be,” Nikola told N1.
The fire swallowed the car, damaged a part of the yard, and caught a street light pole.
That this was a coincidence became clear to them the next day.
Surveillance camera footage shows a masked man walking past the car in a street where there is almost no traffic or passers-by at that time of night.
The police confirmed this to our interlocutor as well.
“A situation that they assumed is that he broke the driver’s window, poured gasoline and as he was pouring, a trace can be seen exactly on the door towards the tire, that he struck something, whether a torch or paper, threw it and it blazed up. The police are correct for now, but we will see how far this will be allowed to go,” he said.
He tells us, the fire was preceded by a student action – where he precisely stood out.
“In the previous days, we tried to spread the banner Students win, on one of the buildings in Inđija in the center of the town, thirty-forty big men with caps arrived, thugs so to speak, who surrounded the four of us… They took a tote bag with documents from a colleague, the banner wasn’t there. The police came, they wrote down our details… I think I caught their eye there as well,” he said.
And this is not the only incident. A journalist from the only critically minded portal in Inđija says that the atmosphere in the town became tense after the student actions.
“Inđija received really strong pressure from the SNS due to their disunity within the party. Coordinators were changed twice in one week, they are trying to consolidate, and then they vent their anger and dissatisfaction on the citizens. Before breaking into the apartment of the activist, a high school girl, thugs were brought to Inđija who were ordered to forbid the spreading of the Students win banners. They received incorrect information so they attacked citizens, snatched things, a phone was snatched from one man,” said Verica Marinčić, editor of the IN medija portal.
While the police claim that they are working on shedding light on all cases, citizens are taking to the streets – under the slogan “You will not scare us”.
“Not only are we not scared, but they motivated us to go to the end. I want to tell all people not to be afraid, that we will win, and that is a fact,” Nikola said.
