Prince-hereditary Filip Karadjordjevic and Princess Danica attended the commemoration of Spasovdan in Krcevac near Topola, where they celebrated the village Slava and zavetina with the locals. As announced by the office of Prince Filip, after the liturgy and the cutting of the Slava cake, the Prince and Princess stayed with the hosts for the Slava lunch under a tent.
The announcement states that the day passed “in a hospitable atmosphere, with song, conversation, and a shared feast,” and that the locals perceived this gesture as an expression of closeness and respect towards the people and tradition.
Prince Filip shared on his Instagram account that events like this are much more than protocol obligations for him.
“Yesterday in Krcevac, together with the hosts, we celebrated Spasovdan, the village Slava, known in these regions as zavetina. In the Church of the Ascension of the Lord, with the presence of the clergy of the Oplenac deanery, the Slava cake was blessed and cut in prayer for the people, unity, and Serbia,” stated Prince Filip.
He pointed out that Topola and its surroundings hold a special place for the Karadjordjevic family.
“These areas around Topola are not just a place of our history, these are the roots of my family. Here, Karadjordje was raising Serbia, here Prince Aleksandar left his endowments and helped the people, and generations of people from this region have for centuries shared both good and difficult times with the Karadjordjevics,” he said.
He spoke specifically about the symbolism of places that gather people and preserve tradition.
“Not far from the church, there is a drinking fountain erected by my ancestor Prince Aleksandar Karadjordjevic, next to the spring that gathered the people of this village and gave life to this area. Such places remind a person that history is not made only by courts and battles, but also by the people, villages, churches, springs, and customs that endure through time,” said Prince Filip.
In conclusion, he stated that he was particularly glad that the holiday was celebrated “simply, hospitably, and the way Serbia knows best – with faith, togetherness, and respect for one’s roots.”
