The departure of Duško Vujošević has triggered an avalanche of emotions that transcends sporting boundaries.
While the basketball world says goodbye to a tactical genius and a strict teacher, Bishop Grigorije’s message illuminated a different, deeply intimate side of the legendary coach – the side of a man who sought the truth even where he was not sure he could find it.
In his touching post, Bishop Grigorije recalled an encounter that left an indelible mark on him, describing Vujošević as a man of rare virtue: a sincerity that suffers no compromises.
The Bishop revealed details of a conversation that took place during a flight, which laid bare Vujošević’s intellectual and spiritual honesty.
“You know, Grigorije, I do not believe, but that does not mean I am proud of it or that I would not like to believe in God,” Vujošević said at the time.
Bishop Grigorije pointed out that he recognized something in that sentence that is rarely encountered:
The Bishop remained moved by those words.
“Upon exiting, I told him that I hadn’t heard a deeper and more sincere confession in a long time.”
Although they did not socialize often, Grigorije emphasized that he highly esteemed Vujošević for his consistency, both in sports and in his long, exhausting struggle for life.
“Another man who did not like to lie is leaving us, and there are fewer and fewer such people. I followed his career and his struggle for life. All of that together was humane and magnificent,” the Bishop wrote.
In the touching finale of his message, Bishop Grigorije expressed hope that Vujošević’s struggle would find its meaning in the next world, despite his earthly dilemmas.
“Today I am sorry that there will be one less brave person among us, but on the other hand, I hope that the Lord will receive him into His Kingdom and that he will be welcomed there with thunderous applause, just like the one he received here from those who loved and understood him.”
