The Serbian national water polo team lost to Hungary in Alexandroupolis 10:12 (2:3, 2:3, 3:5, 3:1), in the third round match of Group A at the qualifying tournament for placement in the World Cup.
The most efficient for Serbia was Nikola Lukić with three goals, Nikola Murišić and Luka Gladović scored two goals each, and Vuk Milojević, Dušan Trtović, and Vasilije Martinović each entered the scorers’ list once.
Hungary was led by Vince Vigvári with four and Gergő Fekete with three goals.
Serbia is second in the group with one win and two losses, while Hungary is in first place with three wins. Later today, Greece and the Netherlands meet in the same group.
After the qualifying phase in two groups, the competition continues with the formation of new groups. In the first, the top two selections from both groups will play, while the second will contain the remaining teams, without a carryover of points.
Regardless of the result of the Greece-Netherlands match, Serbia will continue the competition in the second group.
Participants of the first group will secure direct placement for the World Cup in Sydney, while from the second group, only the winner will earn a place in the final tournament.
The sixth participant will be the host, Australia, while the remaining two spots will be filled by selections from Division 2, whose tournament will be held in Malta with the participation of 23 teams.
The World Cup will take place from July 22 to 26 in Sydney.
