A man was killed and several other people were injured in an incident involving the Goliath roller coaster at Six Flags Over Georgia amusement park near Atlanta, police said today.
Witnesses told local television station WXIA that they saw the man fall from the roller coaster, while one visitor said his fall was captured in a photograph taken during the ride, CNN reported.
The other passengers were evacuated from the ride, while security staff directed visitors away from the roller coaster, which had stopped on an elevated section of the track.
The park was subsequently closed, and similar rides at other Six Flags amusement parks across the United States were temporarily shut down as a precaution.
Georgia’s Goliath roller coaster reaches speeds of around 113 kilometers per hour and a height of approximately 61 meters. The ride lasts three minutes and 30 seconds.
The accident occurred less than two weeks after Six Flags Magic Mountain amusement park in California announced the permanent closure of its X2 roller coaster, following a CNN investigation into the history of injuries and fatalities associated with the ride.
The investigation uncovered more than 10 reports of serious injuries and hospitalizations, including at least two deaths.
Six Flags merged with amusement park operator Cedar Fair in 2024, becoming the largest amusement park operator in the United States.
