The President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, met today with Hungarian Minister of Defense Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky.
Following the meeting, President Vučić attended the signing of a defense cooperation document and then addressed the public with the following words:
- “I am honored to host Minister Szalay-Bobrovniczky, the Hungarian Minister of Defense, today, as this represents a continuation of our important strategic cooperation between Serbia and Hungary in the field of defense—one of the most significant aspects of our overall partnership.”
- “Among all the countries in the region, Serbia has the most intensive and developed defense cooperation with Hungary, both in the number and significance of joint activities. The document signed today by the two ministers operationalizes and concretizes the Strategic Defense Cooperation Agreement reached in 2023,” Vučić stated.
- “For this year, we have agreed on the highest number of activities so far, and what we have arranged with our Hungarian friends is of immense importance to us. Today, we are building the closest strategic relations in defense, and Prime Minister Orban and I have expressed our desire to continue accelerating and aligning all our defense positions,” he added.
- “Hungary has stood by us not only in easy times, and that is why Hungary will always be able to count on Serbia’s support, no matter how easy or difficult its circumstances may be—because that is how true friends are recognized. I asked the Minister to convey my warm regards to Prime Minister Orban, to whom I am grateful for everything he has done to improve Serbian-Hungarian relations,” Vučić emphasized.
- “Serbia’s most significant defense cooperation is with Hungary, and this agreement concretizes that partnership. Thanks to Orban and his government, we have peace—they did not allow a ground offensive in 1999,” Vučić said, highlighting the importance of collaboration and friendship.
79 Joint Activities Planned, Including Helicopter Drills
Vučić revealed that the agreement includes 79 joint activities, nearly twice as many as in 2022, and placed special emphasis on helicopter exercises at military training grounds in Hungary and Serbia, including locations such as Sombor, Batajnica, and Pasuljanske Livade.
- “We have now reached the point where we are building the closest strategic defense relations, considering further improvements, and we believe that this agreement on joint activities could lead to the formation of a military alliance between Serbia and Hungary. Of course, this depends on both the Hungarian and Serbian parliaments, as well as other relevant authorities,” Vučić stated.
- “Back in 2022, we had 48 joint activities, and what we have agreed upon with our Hungarian friends now is of enormous importance. It should not be forgotten that thanks to Prime Minister Orban and his government, Serbia had peace with our northern neighbor even in 1999, when Hungary was under great pressure to allow a ground invasion from its territory—but they refused. Our relations are so strong, especially considering the current situation in Europe and the world,” Vučić emphasized.
Vučić Announces Upcoming Meeting with Prime Minister Orban
The Serbian president also noted that Hungary is purchasing ammunition from Serbia and is interested in Serbian-made military vehicles, while Serbia is considering acquiring Soviet-era systems such as Lynx and BTRs.
- “We are showing great interest in further cooperation, which is very important to us. I also expect to meet with Prime Minister Orban soon, and I want to highlight that our exports to Hungary have increased since 2012, making Hungary Serbia’s fifth-largest trade partner,” Vučić stated, expressing special gratitude for Hungary’s continued support of Serbia—especially during difficult times, not just when things are easy.
- “You recognize true friends in tough times,” Vučić added, underlining that Serbia and Hungary are reliable energy partners. He also mentioned the construction of another oil pipeline in addition to JANAF, which is a crucial step in energy diversification.
- “Hungary has been and will always remain a reliable partner in this field,” Vučić stated, referencing natural gas supply agreements between the two countries.
Hungarian Defense Minister: Hungary Stands for Peace and Serbia’s EU Membership
After President Vučić’s speech, Hungarian Defense Minister Szalay-Bobrovniczky also addressed the public, reflecting on the start of military cooperation in 2023 and highlighting various joint exercises, such as river fleet drills and sharpshooter training.
- “Hungary always stands for peace,” the minister emphasized, adding that Hungary consistently underscores the importance of Serbia’s EU membership.
