The newly elected U.S. President Donald Trump stated today that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad fled the country after losing Russia’s support.

“His protector, Russia, led by Vladimir Putin, was no longer interested in shielding him,” Trump commented in a post on the Truth Social platform.

Earlier, Reuters reported, citing unnamed military commanders, that Assad fled Damascus by plane this morning to an undisclosed location. An unnamed Israeli official claimed that the Syrian leader intended to head to Russia.

Shortly after, Al Jazeera reported that flight-tracking websites showed the plane allegedly carrying Assad lost signal over the rebel-held city of Homs.

The Syrian opposition forces announced today that they had taken control of Damascus and expressed readiness to work with the international community to stabilize the country.
