The US State Department has announced that it will begin revoking the passports of divorced parents who do not pay child support.
The State Department announced that this applies to parents who owe more than 2,500 dollars in child support, but that the target is actually individuals with even larger debts, media reports.
Parents whose passports are confiscated will not be able to apply for new ones until they settle their debts, the State Department states.
Under a 1996 law, child support debtors are not granted passport renewals, but this is now being expanded by introducing the revocation of passports.
To date, that law has led to the collection of 657 million dollars in child support debts, of which 156 million dollars were collected in the last five years.
