Novak Djokovic recorded his worst result at the Masters in Rome in his career, as he was eliminated as early as the second round. After the defeat by Dino Prizmic, he addressed the journalists.

The Serbian tennis player returned to the court after a two-month break. And after an exceptionally good first set – it was clear that in the next two he had problems with his physical condition. At the conference, he was asked whether it was a stomach issue or if his shoulder was hurting.

“I hope you understand that I will not talk about that. I want to congratulate Dino. He deservedly won today. Yes, I came here to play a match or more of them. Unfortunately, it was only one. It is okay. I am glad at least that I fought until the end. I want to thank the crowd. Once again, it was incredible. The support and love I receive is something I do not take for granted,” said Novak.

This was the first tournament Novak played on clay before Roland Garros.

“Yes, honestly, it is not an ideal preparation. I don’t remember the last time in the past few years that I had preparation without any physical or health problems before a tournament. Something always comes up. That is a kind of new reality I have to deal with. Yes, it is frustrating. At the same time, it is my decision to still perform in such a state and under such circumstances. It is what it is.”

Asked if he was confident that he would manage to be in good form by the Grand Slam in Paris, he said:

“I don’t know. I hope so. We will see what happens.”

Djokovic confirmed that he will not play in Geneva, where he won his 100th title last year.

“I am going straight to Roland Garros. That is the decision I made.”

In the end, he evaluated his game in Rome.

“It was okay. I didn’t play that badly. To be honest, I think I didn’t play that badly at all. The second set is, obviously, something to forget, considering how I felt on the court, but the first and third were quite okay. In the end, it was a good fight. I clearly see what I am missing. I am definitely not where I want to be for the highest level, in order to compete with the best and go far.”
