Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić said that the case involving the sound cannon is an “outright lie” and that the sound in the recording published on social media after the student protest was “added afterward.”
“That is not the original sound at all. Because we have obtained the original sound. It was all a lie, from beginning to end, and you will see the evidence in the coming days,” Vučić said after inspecting construction work on the “Vožd Karađorđe” expressway near Mladenovac.
As a reminder, on March 15, 2025, the largest gathering in the country’s history was organized in Belgrade at the students’ invitation. As part of the program, there were also 15 minutes of silence (later, another person succumbed to their injuries) for the victims of the canopy collapse in Novi Sad, but at the 11th minute a sound suddenly rang out, which citizens later described as resembling the sound of an airplane or a vehicle approaching the crowd at high speed on Kralja Milana Street, from the direction of Terazije toward Slavija.
The crowd in this part of the city split into two and widespread panic broke out among the people. In the following days, allegations emerged publicly that a sonic weapon – a sound cannon – had been used.
The authorities denied that any such thing had happened, but it was revealed that the police possessed sound cannons known as LRAD 450XL, after initially claiming that they did not possess them at all, then saying that they had them but that they were kept in storage, before Danas eventually revealed that the devices had in fact been mounted on police vehicles and that those vehicles had been on the streets of Belgrade that day.
Following the incident, a large number of citizens sought medical attention, reporting similar symptoms – dizziness, headaches, nausea and ringing in their ears.
Brussels also reacted to the claims that a sound cannon had been used, calling for an investigation into the incident. However, on March 16, the Higher Public Prosecutor’s Office, headed by Nenad Stefanović, ordered the First Basic Public Prosecutor’s Office to open a case in order to identify individuals who had “spread false information in public” claiming that dozens of citizens with health problems had been treated at the Urgent Center of the University Clinical Center of Serbia.
On April 16, 2025, Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić said that claims about the use of a sound cannon at the March 15 student protest in Belgrade were “a pre-organized and deliberate attack on the state aimed at provoking absolute instability and the violent overthrow of the constitutional order.”
He had previously announced that the investigation would also be conducted by the American FBI and Russian FSB, but only the FSB ultimately published a report stating that “based on the results obtained, it can be categorically concluded that acoustic devices of the LRAD emitter type possessed by Serbian police authorities were not used during the protest.”
