Access beyond the entrance to the village of Šumarak, near the Deliblato Sands, has been blocked as an evacuation is underway due to the wildfire that has been burning for three days. Residents are hoping for the best as firefighters continue battling the blaze.
Police have prohibited access throughout the affected area, meaning that only firefighting crews are allowed to enter the villages of Čardak and Šumarak.

Standing just a few hundred feet from the homes they were forced to leave behind, Šumarak residents watched the smoke spread with disbelief and despair, hoping their properties would be spared.
“We’re praying that everything will be okay… This is terrible and heartbreaking,” one visibly shaken resident, whose home is located near the fire, told an N1 reporter.
Two other local residents also described the situation as catastrophic, expressing hope that firefighters would soon bring the blaze under control.
According to the latest information, more than 700 hectares have been affected by the wildfire in the Deliblato Sands.
A large number of police officers and firefighting crews remain on the scene, while several helicopters are participating in the firefighting effort. The Serbian Army and heavy machinery have also been deployed to help defend the threatened settlements.
