Mountaineer Haris Adilović, who survived the tragedy on Mount Elbrus, spoke to Russian media about what happened during the Bosnian expedition’s ascent toward the summit.

He told the Russian newspaper Izvestia that the tragedy, in which five mountaineers from Zenica lost their lives, was caused by an incorrect weather forecast, not by the group’s lack of preparation.

He also said that the group did not have a local guide, but stressed that this was not the reason the tragedy occurred. According to him, difficulties arose from the very beginning of the ascent, and one of the participants became extremely cold, prompting the lead team to turn back.

“The second team continued climbing, but after another 100 to 150 meters, we also decided to abandon the ascent. We saw that the conditions at the summit were even worse, so we decided to return,” he said.

He emphasized that all members of the team were experienced and knew each other well. He also pointed out that mountaineers in Bosnia and Herzegovina train almost every weekend because the mountains are close by.

As previously reported, the victims of the Elbrus tragedy were Meliha Čaušević, Alma Okanović, Denis Okanović, Almir Krivdić, and Nermin Talam.

Russian emergency services are still carrying out the complex recovery operation despite blizzard conditions, strong winds, and extremely low temperatures on the mountain.
