A magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck the coast of northern California today.

A tsunami warning has been issued for parts of the California and Oregon coasts.

A dozen magnitude 4 earthquakes preceded the strong 7.0 magnitude earthquake that hit the sea area off the northern part of the US state of California this evening, EMSC reported.
The quake occurred at a depth of ten kilometers, EMSC added.

The epicenter of the earthquake was 108 kilometers northwest of the city of Fortuna, which has a population of 12,000, and the larger city in the area is Santa Rosa, with a population of around 180,000.

There is no information yet on any possible material damage.

According to PowerOutrage.us, more than 10,000 customers in Humboldt County, California, which is closest to the earthquake epicenter on Thursday, are without power.

This is about 10% of the total number of tracked customers in that county. There are no significant power outages in the surrounding counties.

According to CNN and the US Geological Survey (USGS), only about 15 magnitude 7.0 earthquakes occur annually.

“However, they usually don’t happen so close to the coast, this time it was very close to the coast,” said Chad Myers of CNN. He added that a 7.0 magnitude earthquake is considered a strong, almost catastrophic earthquake.

According to the National Weather Service, officials are still assessing whether there is a risk of a tsunami for large counties in central and southern California after the strong earthquake that hit the far north of the state.

“San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, Ventura, and Los Angeles counties are still being assessed for potential tsunami impacts,” the NWS Los Angeles office tweeted on X.
