South African national team player Jayden Adams has died at the age of 25, just a few days after returning from the World Cup.
Adams, who played as a midfielder, featured in three group-stage matches at the World Cup. However, he did not get the chance to play in the round of 32 match, in which his team was eliminated after a defeat to Canada.
The sad news was confirmed by the South African Football Association and his family. The official cause of death has not yet been announced, but media reports speculate that it may have been suicide, as Adams had been battling depression.
Brendon Johnson, who was Adams’ mentor, expressed deep sadness in a statement to local media.
“Everything is still too fresh, the family currently does not want to make any statements. Jayden’s passing has completely devastated all of us, especially since he had just returned from the World Cup. The last time we spoke was on Thursday, he seemed to be in very good spirits. He knew what responsibilities awaited him and was preparing for them. I have no words to describe how I feel right now,” Johnson said.
During his club career, Jayden Adams played for Mamelodi Sundowns in South Africa. He made nine appearances for his country’s national team and scored one goal.
