Russia and Ukraine exchanged 146 prisoners of war from both sides after the mediation of the United Arab Emirates, the Russian Ministry of Defense and the Ukrainian president announced.
The Russian ministry stated that all freed Russians are in Belarus and are receiving psychological and medical assistance. Ukraine also returned eight Russian citizens, residents of the Kursk region, to Moscow, the ministry announced.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on the Telegram application that the exchange had taken place, but did not provide any information.
He published pictures of the smiling returnees, saying that most of them had been in captivity since 2022, when Russia invaded its smaller neighbor. He said that a journalist, captured a month after the invasion, was among them.
Zelensky thanked the United Arab Emirates for their role in the exchange.
“The exchanges continue. Maybe it is possible thanks to the fact that our soldiers are increasing the exchange fund for Ukraine,” Zelensky wrote, referring to the capture of Russian soldiers.
