Prof. Dr. Slobodan Savić, a doyen of forensic and legal medicine, is one of the experts whose name appears on the Student List for the upcoming snap parliamentary elections on October 25. Professor Savić’s inclusion is not a surprise, as one of the once-beloved lecturers at two faculties of the University of Belgrade, he is known for his expertise in forensic examinations, which led to him being entrusted with some of the most important cases in Serbia, such as the murder of Prime Minister Zoran Đinđić.
Among the 250 names on the Student List are experts from various fields, but doctors predominate, and one of them is also the first person on this list of election candidates.
The honor of being on this list has also gone to retired professor Prof. Dr. Slobodan Savić, who guided dozens of generations of students at the Faculty of Medicine and Faculty of Law in Belgrade on their professional paths. He is considered one of the most renowned lecturers in the history of the University of Belgrade. In addition to being described as a “great man, friend and teacher,” he passed on extensive knowledge to his students, and even during the faculty blockades, he received thunderous applause from them after lectures he held at the insistence of his own students.
“When students love a professor this much, you know what kind of person he is. It is an honor for us to have a man like Professor Slobodan Savić on our list,” students of the Faculty of Medicine in Belgrade wrote after the Student List was announced.
Alongside the comment, they posted a video showing and hearing students applauding “until their palms were burning” after one of his lectures, while the professor, with tears in his eyes, blew kisses to them.
Their post was also supplemented by colleagues from Novi Sad, who noted: “He is no less respected in Novi Sad.”

After the Student List was announced, Professor Savić told Nova.rs, regarding his name on the list of student candidates, that “no one has the right to turn down such a call.”
“From the beginning of the blockades and protests, I have wholeheartedly supported my students. During the blockades, they called me several times to give lectures at the Faculty of Medicine in Belgrade and in Novi Sad, even though I was already retired at the time. After everything, I never dreamed that something like this would happen, that they would actually succeed, even though I wanted it so badly. Then one day I received a call asking me to be on their list. Although I believe that no one has the right to turn down such a call, I told them that perhaps it would be better for someone younger than me to be on the list of candidates. However, there was no room for discussion; they insisted that one of the names should be mine,” Prof. Dr. Savić said.
He says he found out that he was officially on the list four days ago.
“This is a great honor for me, but also an obligation to justify their trust, and I will try as hard as I can. There is still a lot of work to be done before October 25. A great deal still needs to be done, and everything depends on the students. All of us who are on the list are here to do together with them what is up to us. I still do not know exactly what my role will be, but the students have made a choice based on a system in which everyone will do the best they can within their own profession. Until now, we have not had a situation in which experts had a say in this country and in the organization of institutions, but that will change. Very soon after we hear the election results, changes will take place,” Prof. Dr. Savić said.
Worked as an expert in the Đinđić, Stambolić and Arkan murder cases…
We should recall that Professor Savić became known to the public back in 2003, when he and two other doctors were entrusted with conducting an expert examination following the assassination of Prime Minister Zoran Đinđić. Prof. Savić performed the autopsy immediately after the assassination on March 12, 2003.
In addition to this murder, Prof. Dr. Savić participated as a forensic expert in the court proceedings concerning the murder of Ivan Stambolić, followed by that of Željko Ražnatović Arkan, and he also worked on attempts to shed light on the Topčider case, in which two members of the Guards Brigade were killed.
The public also knows that, as a leading expert in medicine and law, the professor later spoke out during the COVID pandemic, as well as in the case of Pink owner Željko Mitrović and his “quackery.”
Namely, after Željko Mitrović publicly advocated the use of ozone therapy to treat COVID in 2020, the Monitoring and Analysis Service of the Regulatory Authority for Electronic Media (REM) concluded that there were not enough elements to establish reasonable suspicion that the criminal offense of quackery had been committed.
The professor responded to REM’s conclusion.
“I don’t know whether I properly explained the essence of this ‘epoch-making discovery,’ but if I didn’t, ‘Informer’ did it much better than I did, writing that Mitrović was right because the aforementioned gas is converted in the blood into hydrogen peroxide (hydrogen), which disinfects the blood of viruses and bacteria. In response to this publicly announced absurdity (for the sake of decency, I will refrain from using a harsher word), all professional medical associations should have reacted immediately and pointed out to the public that this news was untrue and extremely dangerous, both from a medical and moral standpoint, and that it is a disgrace that must be stopped,” Prof. Dr. Savić wrote at the time.
A title he carries with pride
In any case, the overall work of Prof. Dr. Savić has left its mark on the medical and legal professions in Serbia. He always built his career on the foundations of medicine, law and ethics, and although he is now retired, he has remained in the hearts of his students as a teacher; as he once said himself, that is a title he carries with pride.
Professor Savić was born in 1957 in Zagreb. He enrolled at the Faculty of Medicine in Belgrade in the 1976/77 academic year and graduated in April 1982 with an average grade of 9.82.
He was appointed associate professor at the Faculty of Medicine in Belgrade in December 1999, and full professor in the narrower field of Forensic Medicine on April 4, 2007.
From April 1995 to June 1997, he underwent professional training at the Department of Forensic Medicine at Lund University in Sweden. By a decision of the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Serbia in 1999, he was entered into the register of permanent court-appointed experts in the field of Forensic Medicine.
In April 2000, he was elected a member of the presidency of the Forensic Medicine Section of the Serbian Medical Society, and in 2004 he became a member of the presidency of the Association of Forensic Medicine of Serbia and Montenegro and editor-in-chief of the association’s journal, “Medicina Forensis.” He was a member of the Association of Forensic Medicine of Yugoslavia, the Traffic Medicine Section, the Toxicology Section and the Suicide Prevention Section of the Serbian Medical Society.
In June 2007, he was elected a member of the Ethics Committee of the Clinic for Neurology and Psychiatry for Children and Youth in Belgrade. By a decision of the Government of Serbia in November 2007, he was appointed president of the Ethics Board of Serbia.
