U.S. President Donald Trump’s spiritual adviser, Pastor Mark Burns, said he is aware of the persecution Christians are facing in Kosovo and Metohija, stressing that such treatment does not have the support of the President of the United States.
“We know about the persecution our Christian brothers and sisters are suffering in Kosovo and Metohija. We receive reports every day, and I can tell you this: President Trump does not support it,” Burns said in a video address.
He stressed that the U.S. president is a protector of the Christian community, bringing the issue of the position of the Serbian Orthodox Church and the Serbian people in Kosovo and Metohija back into the spotlight in political and religious circles in Washington.
Burns visited Serbia in early July, where he met with Serbian Patriarch Porfirije and discussed religious freedoms, the position of Christians and the protection of Serbian holy sites. He subsequently visited the Patriarchate of Peć and Visoki Dečani together with the Patriarch, saying that he had come to listen to people whose fears and suffering are often overlooked.
His message carries particular weight at a time when Serbs in Kosovo and Metohija are facing increasingly strong institutional pressure, while Serbian Orthodox Church churches and monasteries have repeatedly been subjected to desecration, attacks and attempts to challenge their identity.
Burns had previously called for permanent guarantees of freedom of movement and access to holy sites for Patriarch Porfirije and the Serbian Orthodox Church. His words therefore represent an important signal that the truth about the position of the Serbian people and the Church is finding its way to influential circles in the United States.
