The President of the United States of America, Donald Trump, stated that a wealthy private donor has provided $130 million to the US government to cover potential shortfalls in military pay due to the ongoing government shutdown.
Speaking at a White House event, Trump praised the donor as a “patriot” and a “friend,” but declined to reveal his identity, Reuters reported.
“He called us the other day and said, ‘I would like to contribute toward any shortfall you may have due to the Democrats’ shutdown… because I love the military and I love the country,'” Trump said.
The administration is under increasing pressure to ensure active-duty soldiers are paid despite the budgetary stalemate, Reuters notes.
Trump had earlier signed an executive order allowing the Pentagon to reallocate unspent research funds for the purpose of paying military salaries.
House Speaker Mike Johnson assessed that this was a temporary solution and warned that soldiers could soon go without pay if Congress does not pass a budget.
The work of the US federal government has been partially suspended since October 1 due to lawmakers’ disagreements over a new budget, with disputes over healthcare subsidies at the center of the blockade.
The White House did not respond to a request for comment.
