Ahead of the snap parliamentary elections in Serbia on Sunday, October 25, employees of institutions operating under the auspices of official Belgrade in Kosovo are being pressured to vote for the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS), four sources told Radio Free Europe (RFE).

They spoke on condition that their names not be published, fearing they could lose their jobs if they do not vote for the SNS.

They say that officials of Srpska Lista, the party in power in all ten municipalities with a Serbian majority in Kosovo, are involved in pressuring voters, RFE reports.

“I am voting in the elections in Serbia under pressure (for the Serbian Progressive Party), not of my own free will,” one of the interviewees told RFE.

As he added, he will go to the polling stations in an organized manner, together with colleagues and other residents of the municipality in Kosovo where he lives, while transportation to the polling stations in Serbia is being organized by Srpska Lista.

Among the 6.45 million citizens on Serbia’s voter roll, more than 115,000 have addresses in Kosovo.

They exercise their right to vote at polling stations in Serbia, in four border municipalities – Vranje, Raška, Tutin and Kuršumlija – where 60 polling stations will be opened for them.

RFE writes that the Serbian community is primarily going to the polls, relying on the government in Belgrade, because educational and healthcare institutions continue to operate in Serbian-majority areas of Kosovo under the auspices of official Belgrade, while other institutions of the Serbian system have been relocated to Serbia, to border towns.

Neither Srpska Lista nor the Serbian Progressive Party responded to RFE’s questions.
