A thirty-two-year-old citizen of Ukraine attacked a family of tourists on Saturday evening in Halkidiki, convinced they were of Russian origin. The attacker was arrested and brought before an investigating judge in Polygyros, and according to unofficial information, it is a person who has previously had serious psychological problems.

According to a report by the Greek national television ERT, the suspect claimed before the court that he felt threatened and that he was allegedly “attacked by Russians,” and that he used a knife to defend his brother. It is also stated that, until today, the accused was not fully aware of which authorities he was appearing before, which confirms the defense’s claims of long-standing psychological disturbances.

The victims of this senseless attack are a 75-year-old Hungarian man, his wife (59), a German citizen, and her 40-year-old son. The attacker inflicted knife wounds on the elderly married couple, while he physically assaulted the 40-year-old. Immediately after the incident, the injured tourists were cared for at the hospital in Polygyros, from which they have since been released for home treatment.

Following the hearing which concluded on Tuesday, the prosecutor and the investigating judge agreed to order the suspect into detention. At the same time, the defense’s request for a psychiatric evaluation was accepted, which is why the man was sent to the hospital in Polygyros for the necessary examinations, while a supplementary evaluation is scheduled for Thursday. Until the process of assessing his mental health is completed, he will remain in the detention unit.
