FRENCH TENNIS PLAYER OF SERBIAN ORIGIN WINS WIMBLEDON: Kristina Mladenović claims her seventh Grand Slam doubles title! (VIDEO)

Kristina Mladenović, the French tennis player of Serbian origin, won the Wimbledon title together with her doubles partner, China’s Hanyu Guo.

Mladenović and Guo defeated the Brazilian-Canadian pair of Luisa Stefani and Gabriela Dabrowski in the final in straight sets, 6:3, 7:5.

The match lasted one hour and 33 minutes.

Seventh doubles title

Mladenović and Guo today won their first Wimbledon women’s doubles title. For Mladenović, this is her seventh women’s doubles Grand Slam title overall, while Guo claimed her first Grand Slam title in the discipline.

In addition to her seven women’s doubles titles, the popular Kiki has also won three mixed doubles Grand Slam titles.

Originating from Kosovo and Metohija

Kristina was born in the far north of France, in Dunkirk, but her first and last name clearly show that her roots come from this region. Her father, Dragan Mladenović, is a former handball player, while her mother, Dženita Helić, is a former volleyball player.

“When my father left in 1991, there was still no war in Yugoslavia. My mother stayed in Serbia, but despite everything, she decided to follow love. My father signed for Dunkirk, and later he had an offer from Germany. I drew him a picture explaining that I liked my school, and that’s why we stayed in France. Later, when I showed talent in tennis, we stayed in France because of me,” Kristina said in an interview in 2017.

On her mother’s side, her family originates from Prijepolje, while on her father’s side, her roots are in Serbia’s southern province, where she used to visit her grandmother as a child.

Proud of her roots

She has never hidden the fact that she is proud of her roots.

“I am proud of my roots, but I was born in France and have never lived in the former Yugoslavia. My father became a naturalized French citizen. In my mind I am French, while in my heart I am Serbian,” Mladenović said.

When Novak Đoković wrote “Kosovo is Serbia” on a camera during the French Open three years ago, he received Mladenović’s wholehearted support.

Last year, she visited Belgrade. At the time, she posted a photo in front of the Church of Saint Sava with the message: “Returning to my roots,” along with the words “family” and “home.”
