A 53-year-old Serbian citizen with no registered residence in Germany was arrested on Friday morning in the German town of Gifhorn after being found asleep behind the wheel of a car that police suspect he had attempted to steal.
According to a police statement, at around 6:30 a.m., a private security employee at a company on Nordhoffstraße reported that the window of a Mazda had been smashed.
When officers arrived at the scene, they found the suspect asleep in the driver’s seat of the vehicle. The investigation determined that he had previously attempted to start the car using an improvised, homemade key.
After failing to start the vehicle, the man allegedly fell asleep in the driver’s seat, where police found him. He did not resist arrest.
Arrived on a stolen bicycle
Nearby, police officers also found a stolen bicycle that the suspect is believed to have used as transportation before attempting to steal the car, German media reported.
Police found no evidence that he was under the influence of alcohol or drugs. After being questioned and undergoing other police procedures, he was released because the legal requirements for pretrial detention were not met.
He remains under investigation on suspicion of attempted aggravated motor vehicle theft, as well as bicycle theft.
