Bulgarian Energy Minister Traycho Traykov ordered an urgent inspection and measures to remove radioactive waste from a site in the Malinova Dolina city district, following reports of radioactive contamination at the former site of the Central Isotope Storage.
According to Traykov, background radiation values reaching between 10 and 70 times above natural levels were recorded in some places. Measurements were taken about ten centimeters above the ground surface. Despite the elevated values, authorities assure that if the introduced access restrictions are respected, there is no immediate risk to human health or the environment.
Teams from the State Enterprise “Radioactive Waste” performed a complete inspection of the area with specialized equipment for isotope identification. The results were communicated to the minister, as well as to representatives of the National Center for Radiobiology and Radiation Protection and other institutions.
