Protesters from a new movement in France organized protests on highways that caused traffic chaos early Wednesday morning, with dozens of people detained as security forces were deployed across the country, officials said.
Information about the “Block Everything” demonstrations appeared on social media during the summer, and analysts and users compared them to the “Yellow Vests” protests of 2018. At that time, the demonstrations began due to an increase in fuel prices, but they soon spread into a broader movement against French President Emmanuel Macron and his economic reform plans.

Members of the “Block Everything” movement, which analysts and officials say started among right-wing groups and was later taken over by the left and far-left, claim that the political system is no longer functional and does not serve the citizens.
These demonstrations further complicate the political situation in France, just two days after parliament ousted Prime Minister François Bayrou in a no-confidence vote. On Tuesday, Macron appointed his fifth prime minister in less than two years, Sébastien Lecornu.

The far-left party France Unbowed has already announced that it will file a no-confidence motion against Lecornu, while the far-right National Rally is currently ready to cooperate with him.
Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau told reporters early Wednesday morning that about 50 masked people tried to block traffic in Bordeaux, while in Toulouse there was a small fire on cables, which was quickly extinguished but still caused congestion between Toulouse and Auch, in southwestern France.

Deployed security forces and arrests across the country
Retailleau stated that some actions were also recorded in Paris during the night, but he did not specify details. Parisian police said that 75 people have been detained so far, but they did not announce where or why they were arrested, Reuters reports.
Elsewhere, the highway operator Vinci reported protests and traffic jams across France, including Marseille, Montpellier, Nantes, and Lyon.

Minister Retailleau said that 80,000 members of the security forces have been deployed across the country, including 6,000 in Paris. French media had earlier reported that about 100,000 people were expected to participate in the demonstrations.
“There is a risk of a mobilization that could lead to actions across the country,” Retailleau warned.
