The third session of the Municipal Assembly of Kula ended today after 55 minutes, 30 of which were spent on a recess. The first item on the agenda was the confirmation of councilor mandates. Opposition councilors from the “Voice of the Youth of the Municipality of Kula” list boycotted the work of the Municipal Assembly, while the quorum needed to confirm the mandates was secured by councilor candidates.

Opposition councilors from the “Voice of the Youth of the Municipality of Kula” list boycotted today’s session and later entered the assembly hall to announce that they would continue boycotting sessions until further notice, N1 reports.

Aleksandar Nastić, head of the “Voice of the Youth of the Municipality of Kula” councilor group, explained to N1 that this morning 16 councilors and three councilor candidates did everything they believed they should do, thereby violating both the rules of procedure and the law.

“Councilor candidates can vote, but they cannot constitute a quorum. And even among those three candidates, one submitted her resignation because she had been elected to the Municipal Council at the previous session. At that moment she had already violated the law and could no longer be a councilor candidate,” said Nastić.

He added that the “Voice of the Youth of the Municipality of Kula” had filed lawsuits with the Administrative Court regarding events at the previous two sessions and is now awaiting a response.

“Our job was to file those lawsuits. When they will react, whether they will make a decision… our duty is to respect the law and act in accordance with the law,” he added.

Ahead of the start of the session, an N1 reporter stated that the atmosphere today was less dramatic than it had been previously.

Councilors from the “Voice of the Youth of the Municipality of Kula” list remained outside the building, next to the fence erected by the municipality, and refused to enter the session.

Roland Šipoš from the list said that in this way they were demonstrating that the executive bodies had been elected illegitimately at previous sessions, and that he did not understand the need for such a large police presence when the previous session had passed “in the best possible order,” both inside and outside.

Asked why the fence bothered them so much, Šipoš said that the dignity of the Assembly should be respected, but also that it was absurd if all sessions over the next four years were going to be held in this manner.

“The authorities are showing that they are not even capable of holding a session without police officers and security measures around the Municipal Assembly building,” he emphasized.

An N1 reporter stated that private security personnel were also present around the municipal building and had allowed only one media crew inside. Other media outlets, including N1, were prevented from following the session from inside the building.
