BARNA IS THE EUROPEAN SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIP RUNNER-UP: Historic silver in Paris alongside a new Serbian national record!

Andrej Barna won the silver medal in the 50-meter freestyle at the European Championships in Paris.

The swimmer from Subotica, who lives and works in the United States, lived up to his status as one of the favorites. In the final, he put together a phenomenal race and claimed silver with a national record of 21.37 seconds. He improved by seven hundredths of a second on the time he posted at last year’s World Championships in Singapore.

The gold medal went to 19-year-old Ukrainian Shermet, who finished in 21.13, while top favorite Russian Kornev recorded the exact same time as the outstanding Serbian swimmer. Renowned swimmer Kristóf Milák finished fourth in 21.46.

Two years ago, at the European Championships in Belgrade, Barna was part of the European championship-winning 4×100-meter freestyle relay team, while he won bronze in the individual 100-meter freestyle. He has now completed his collection of continental medals.

He competed at the Olympic Games in Tokyo and Paris, where he narrowly missed out on reaching the final in the 100-meter freestyle, while last year he finished sixth in the world in the 50-meter freestyle in Singapore.

In addition to holding the Serbian national record in the 50-meter freestyle, he also holds the country’s best result in the 100-meter freestyle, with a time of 47.66 seconds.
