They say that dogs are the only creatures that welcome their owners every day as if they are the most important beings in the world. And that is one of the reasons why most people today cannot imagine life without them. When owners are not around, someone trustworthy, responsible, and full of love for animals steps in and turns that passion into a profession.

Nine dogs with different personalities — one loves to run, another stops at every corner, while a third one loves cuddling with children.

Nikša Herman says that dogs’ needs are quite simple: they want to move, sniff around, and play.

“I pick them all up together and then take them to Kalemegdan, where they get everything they need in one place,” Herman added.

Five years ago, he returned from Vietnam, where he worked as an English teacher. He adopted a dog named Lima, who now has as many as eight friends.

Lima has an eight-member group for playing and walking every day because his owner takes care of all of them. As he says, it all started when his friends asked him to look after their dogs, and then he realized that this was something he wanted to do.

“I want to play with dogs, so I combined pleasure and usefulness and achieved one of my childhood dreams,” says Herman.

Nikša’s dream came true, but it certainly came true for those he takes care of as well. Although they cannot speak, they know how to show it.

He says he has the most beautiful office in the world — the river and the riverbank. Besides taking care of and walking dogs whose owners are traveling or at work, he has also helped find homes for some dogs he rescued from the streets with the help of friends.

“Before they go to their new home, I train with them, work with them, provide mental stimulation, play with them, and they play and socialize with each other. We have one main morning walk, after which we return so they can eat. Later, I take them out again, three or four times in total during the day,” Herman explained.

As he says, the job is demanding, but it can also be profitable. However, he has no problems with his neighbors because he and the dogs are mostly outside, and the group in front of the building often becomes even bigger because neighborhood dogs join them as well. Behind these eight leashes are experience, patience, and a great deal of love for animals.
