Professor Dr. Ilija Srdanović is the top candidate on the student list for the upcoming snap parliamentary elections, which will be held on October 25. As a professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Novi Sad, Dr. Srdanović supported the students from the very beginning of the blockades, and later spoke at their protests and rallies.

For months, there had been speculation in the public that Prof. Dr. Srdanović’s name was among the candidates on the student list, which was recently revealed at the first pre-election rally of the student movement in Novi Sad, where he was one of the speakers.

The public first heard about Professor Srdanović, a cardiology subspecialist at the Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases of Vojvodina in Sremska Kamenica, following his address to students in February last year. He then repeated his strong speech on May 23 in Slavija, and more recently, on September 10 in Novi Sad.

It is worth recalling that when he took the stage, he first welcomed the citizens to free Novi Sad.

“Have the perpetrators been punished, have the institutions responded? The students demanded a response from the institutions, and what did they get? The state’s answer was ‘no, there are no perpetrators.’ They will not find the perpetrators. Do you know why? Because they are the most responsible and the biggest perpetrators! We are looking for a way out from a generation of young people who want to change the country and make it better, and they have already made it better!” the professor told the crowd in Novi Sad.

He then responded to a question posed by some: “What is the guarantee?”

“The guarantee is a timeless slogan summed up in two words: Students are winning!” the professor emphasized.

Vučić “persona non grata”

What qualifies him as a candidate on the student list, besides his active support for the students, is his knowledge, expertise and fight for a better-functioning healthcare system in Serbia, for which he has been known since the beginning of his career.

Besides being highly regarded in his field as an outstanding cardiologist, Dr. Srdanović is also a member of the academic network Slobodan univerzitet from Novi Sad, and in June this year, as a representative of the Regional Chamber of Vojvodina, he was the candidate of the independent group of doctors “Naša komora” for president of the Serbian Medical Chamber.

In March 2025, after addressing students in front of the Faculty of Medicine in Novi Sad in February of that year, he was summoned for questioning by the police. At the time, he received a summons to appear, as a citizen, for questioning at the premises of the Ministry of Internal Affairs following a criminal complaint.

The professor also drew a reaction from part of the public when, in an interview with the Nova.rs portal in September last year, speaking about the regime and the President of Serbia, he said that “Vučić knows very well that he is ‘persona non grata’ in Novi Sad.”

Prof. Dr. Srdanović graduated from the Faculty of Medicine in Novi Sad in 1995 and specialized in internal medicine in 2001, followed by a subspecialization in cardiology in 2004.

He earned a master’s degree in cardiology from the Faculty of Medicine in Belgrade in 2010, and received his PhD in cardiology from the Faculty of Medicine in Novi Sad in 2012.

A soldier all his life

Dr. Srdanović has taught at the Department of Emergency Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine in Novi Sad since 2018, and has been a full professor since 2025.

He has been employed at the Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases of Vojvodina in Sremska Kamenica for nearly three decades, since 1997. The doctor also specializes in percutaneous closure of patent foramen ovale (PFO) and atrial septal defect (ASD).

The professor was born in 1970 in Novi Sad. He completed elementary school and high school in Vrbas.

On the “Da sam ja neko” program, he said that he had been “essentially a soldier all his life.”

“A classic soldier, with a rifle in his hands, recruited during wartime. Then, a soldier in my profession, fighting for people’s lives. All my colleagues and I alongside them. And finally, a soldier fighting for a better tomorrow for his nation. For me, that is patriotism. Fighting for a better tomorrow for your country. Fighting for freedom,” Prof. Dr. Srdanović said.
