In the night between Thursday and Friday, two convicts escaped from the District Prison in Prokuplje.

This is a semi-open type institution to which persons sentenced for the first time to shorter prison terms for minor criminal offenses are sent.

The Administration for the Execution of Criminal Sanctions urgently issued an order to conduct an extraordinary inspection supervision in this institution in order to determine all the circumstances of the incident.

“All employees determined to have made a failure in their work will be sanctioned in accordance with the law,” the Administration for the Execution of Criminal Sanctions says.

The authorities emphasize that the prison building in Prokuplje is extremely old, built back in 1878, and that relocating the prison from this inadequate facility has been planned for some time.

According to unofficial information, the persons who escaped had been convicted of the criminal offense of theft. What is particularly surprising is the fact that the fugitives’ sentence was about to expire soon — for one of them in just four months.

The police are intensively searching for the escaped persons, and an investigation into how they managed to leave the prison premises is underway.
