The Supreme Secretary of Iran’s National Security Council, Ali Larijani, has been killed, Iranian media confirmed, citing a statement from his office.
The Secretariat of the Supreme National Security Council stated that Larijani was killed together with his son, Morteza Larijani, reports BBC Persian.
Earlier today, the Israeli military announced that Larijani and the commander of the Basij volunteer paramilitary forces, Gholamreza Soleimani, were killed in an Israeli airstrike on Iran overnight.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) confirmed Soleimani’s death during the day.
It is believed that after the killing of then Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, Larijani had effectively been the true leader of the Iranian regime since February 28.
For years, he was considered one of the most senior and experienced figures in the leadership of the Iranian regime and was a trusted associate of Ali Khamenei.
