The dean of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Belgrade, Professor Dr. Tatjana Simić, has been removed from her position at today’s session of the faculty’s council, as we have learned.
In addition to the dean, all vice deans for teaching were also replaced today. Professor Nataša Milić, who resigned from the position of vice dean in December of last year, immediately after the start of the blockade, has been appointed acting dean.
The Faculty of Medicine in Belgrade has been under public scrutiny for the past few weeks, primarily due to a decision by the Ministry of Health to temporarily ban scientific research at this higher education institution.
The reason given for this decision was the dean’s “DNA biobank,” which she had mentioned in publications but which the Serbian Ethics Committee claims was not registered. The ban on research applies to studies conducted on patients without the consent of the institutions’ ethics committees.
Students Allege Illegal Removal
Since the beginning of the blockades at the Faculty of Medicine, there has been turmoil due to the disagreement of a large number of professors with the dean’s office’s decisions. Professors voted for a general strike earlier this year, which was later called off because it was not conducted in accordance with the law.
Following numerous media reports about the administration of the Faculty of Medicine and Professor Simić, who students say was initially against the blockades but later changed her stance and supported the protests, she has now been suddenly removed from the head of this institution.
Although students claim they did not always agree with the dean and even blocked her office, they say the removal is illegal.
“Today, the dean was illegally removed in a way that is contrary to every law and statute of our faculty. Although we blocked her office and were not close to her, this is unacceptable,” medical students told Nova.rs.
