European Union leaders today called for restraint and a diplomatic solution after US attacks on Iran.

The head of European Union (EU) diplomacy, Kaja Kallas, today called on all parties to return to the negotiating table and prevent further escalation, after the US joined Israel in directly bombing Iran.

“Iran must not be allowed to develop nuclear weapons, as this would be a threat to international security,” Kallas stated on X.

She added that EU foreign ministers will discuss the newly emerged situation tomorrow.

The President of the European Council, António Costa, emphasized on X that he was deeply disturbed by this morning’s news from the Middle East.

“I call on all parties to show restraint and respect international law and nuclear security,” he added.

He also said that diplomacy remains the only way to achieve peace and security in the region, and that too many civilians will once again be victims of further escalation.

“The EU will continue to engage with the parties and our partners to find a peaceful solution at the negotiating table,” he wrote.
