The Serbian government will declare Wednesday, January 22, a Day of Mourning due to the death of eight people in a fire at a nursing home in the Belgrade municipality of Barajevo, Prime Minister Miloš Vučević announced.

Addressing reporters, he expressed condolences to the families of the victims and announced that the state would provide them with assistance.

He added that the cause of the fire would be determined by an investigation, but that preliminary information indicates that the cause of the fire was human error.

“It is not related to the technical conditions of the home, the facility is legal, as Minister (for Labor Nemanja) Starović informed me,” the prime minister said.

Eight people died in a fire overnight at a nursing home in Veliko Borko, while seven were injured.

Minister of Labor Nemanja Starović stated that, according to preliminary data, there are indications that the fire was arson.
